Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia and will affect 1 in 85 people globally by 2050.

In our research we discovered that for the well-being of Alzheimer patients it is extremely important to encourage physical activity and social interaction.

Rather than creating a large uniform building with stacked floors, we wanted to provide a single-level building promoting human scale, richness and variation in the overall spatial experience between inside and outside. A place where people feel at home and cared for, a space that is warm, receptive, and welcoming.

The new living environment for 28 Alzheimer patients is designed as a cluster of four houses. Similar to monasteries the careful layout features interlocking rooms that wrap around two central courtyards. Seemingly shifted from each other, the building is actually a careful composition of spaces responding to the needs to create enclosed courtyards with a natural and secure feeling. We proposed a large covered outdoor space as the heart of the building that allows continuous circulation between two courtyards. A meeting place that provides shelter and overview.
