De Key's demand for a future-proof working environment with collective and flexible workspaces for all colleaugues united, is answered with a series of smart interventions.
Here, retaining the buildings and the concept of connection were integral to the design. We proposed to intensify the urban and social identity of De Key with an office that will function just like the surrounding city: a variety of characteristic places and atmospheres, diverse and intensively used, enticing for various groups, cutting edge in terms of flexibility and circularity, with a clear position in its surroundings and sometimes outright surprising.
A key element of the transformation is the connection of the spaces on the ground floor. To link the programme and its users the three building elements and the space between them are going to be opened up at street level.
The transparent ground floor will, in turn, connect with the surroundings. At street level, an unbroken structure of concrete frames, open or with glass facades, will tie together the three building elements and the inner courtyard as if with a ribbon. In addition, a garden (where the car park is currently situated) will be visually prominent from the Nieuwe Vaart canal.
The enlarged windows will lend an inviting character to the restaurant on the ground floor and the double stairs in the atrium filled with plants behind the largest opening will be the eye-catcher from the Hoogte Kadijk. Upon entering, a warm welcome awaits in this generous space brimming with activity.
